I posed several questions to Clio, and here is some valuable advice she shared. Small business tip and to get you started.
Q1. How important is good marketing when getting your name out there?
I have tried and tested various methods of marketing- there are literally so many avenues, but what I have found works best for me is the sharing of valuable insights. Getting in front of my ideal clients and sharing my passion for women’s health with them. Providing free information and sharing knowledge, just enough to spark some interest and plant the seed of possibilities my services can support them with.
Q2. Your two top tips for building a new business?
1. Do one thing at a time. Set small goals and once you achieve those move onto the next thing. Trying to do it all at once ends up putting you into a head spin. For example, my first step was to start transforming my personal Instagram account into my business Instagram, next I arranged a photoshoot to support my socials content and to use on a website. Next, I outsourced my Squarespace website to a very clever woman on Fiverr (supporting women in small businesses of course.)
2. Don’t quit your day job until you have proof of concept, and by that, I mean you are able to make a small income off your new venture as proof that people are interested in your services.
Q3. Should I get a website? And how hard is it to do yourself?
Absolutely get a website, it is your brand. Think about every time you are looking to engage someone for a service- you want to know the who, the why and the how. People will be looking to do the same with you. It gives you credibility and makes them feel like they know a little more about you as a person.
I would absolutely outsource website creation- I have tried doing this on several platforms myself and it is extremely time consuming and stressful as a non techie person. I have both a Shopify for my product-based store @aphrodite_au and a Squarespace site for my women’s health services @clio_austin . Both created by women who run their own business, great quality and at a very reasonable cost. DM me on Instagram if you would like their contact details!

Q2: 1. Build a Strong Network: Networking is crucial for any new business. Attend industry events, join local business groups, and connect with potential customers, suppliers, and mentors. A strong network can provide support, advice, and opportunities for partnerships that may help your business grow. Also, it’s a great place to make friends with likeminded people who may just be the connection you need.
2. Establish your systems as early as you can. I truly spent countless stressful hours on simple tasks that could have been easily managed. If I had taken the time to learn and implement them sooner, I would have saved myself a lot of frustration..
Q3. I found that having a good social page was all I really needed at the start until things started to grow. And then I thought I can do this my self- how hard can It be? Omg that was the biggest mistake. Unless you are very tech minded find someone to help as your hours are better spent on other things within your business.
